Anapod iPod Software Review

Gear @ IGN has a review of Anapod from Red Chair Software. Anapod is an iPod companion software package for Windows that gives much tighter integration with Windows than iTunes. This includes one of my must-have features: drag-and-drop file transfers from Windows Explorer. Unlike iTunes however, Anapod isn't free. It's $25 for either the iPod or iPod Mini edition or $30 for the Universal edition that supports both.

From the review:

So why even get third-party software when you get a full version of iTunes for free with the iPod? After trying Anapod, I would ask why wouldn't you use it over iTunes. In fact, the only thing I think iTunes has over Anapod is the price. However, if you are serious about your music Anapod has much more to offer.

And:

If you own an iPod I strongly suggest you try out Anapod. It will add several useful features to your iPod and streamline transfers. The list of features is excellent and the implementation of these features is almost perfect. RDC also enjoys a history of solid updates and product support, so you needn't worry about buying software from a company that might vaporize in a couple months. There's really no reason not to use it.

Recommended without reservation.

the main reason to use 3rd party software with an ipod is if you want to use your ipod to transfer music. You cannot take music off an ipod with iTunes.

Anapod is also good if your sucky iTunes Windows software won't recognize your iPod. How hard could it be? It's just a usb device, and the system recognizes it as a mass storage device. So why can't Apple make iTunes recognize an iPod on any Windows computer? Anapod has no problems recognizing the iPod.

I've not used Anapod, but working in WinTel/Win32 SW development, I can't imagine anything being *worse* than iTunes. It steals focus, it stalls for long periods of time and sometimes stalls the entire computer, it doesn't update the UI frequently so it's often off doing something that should be reflected in the UI (if even just an hourglass) but isn't, it doesn't respect Z-order or focus rules, it's klunky, and half the time it either can't find my iPod in the first (without a reboot) or refuses to eject the iPod properly on the other (forcing me to hard reset the iPod and on occasion losing content.)

Anapod is nice for Win XP users but if you are stuck at WinME you need to install the Microsoft GDI DLL to transfer JPEG's to the iPod. You say; where do I get the DI? I say; below is the link that shoud be part of the ANAPOD software download.

I purchased the Anapod Explorer 8.9.5 Universal version. There are some things that you should know before buying Anapod. One the activation process is token based which means that the software has to communicate with Red Chair servers for the everytime Anapod is installed AND for each indivdual iPod you may own. You MUST register each MP3 device with Red Chair! This is very klunky and unnecessary. Also there is no documentation that comes with the software. The only thing that comes close is an online, non-downloadble HTML page on the Red Chair website. This is very bush-league. And forget about customer support. Three emails to Red Chair tech support have gone unanswered in one week. But to Red's credit, the software seems to work OK. The interface could be more user-friendly and could be better designed. I will be looking into doing a chargeback on my credit card.
