As reported earlier, iPods are powered by a chip, the PP5002, by Player Portal. Well lo and behold, Player Portal has announced their next-generation chip, the PP5020.
What are some of the new features of the PP5020? Interestingly enough, JPEG image format support, MPG video format support and TV out!
This lends pretty strong support to the new generation iPod rumor. These chips do most of the iPod's heavy lifting under the hood. It probably wasn't too difficult for Apple to replace the older chipset with the new one.
For the interested, the PP5020 datasheet has all the technical details.
MPG video format support? I see mjpeg mentioned, but the specs seem to indicate that only still photos can be displayed.
Posted by: Some Guy at March 17, 2004 05:24 PMIf I understand it correctly, video wouldn't be viewable on the LCD, but rather with a TV through the video outputs, like a portable VCR.
Posted by: Lindsey Smith at March 17, 2004 06:12 PMyou don't think this rumor came about from someone reading the portalplayer press release and guessing apple would pick up the new chip? chicken and egg, lads.
Posted by: ac at March 18, 2004 05:20 PMWhat you describe is certainly possible and I'm trying to not to present this rumor has fact. However the new PP5020 *is* inside the iPod Mini, so we do know that Apple is already using it.
Posted by: Lindsey Smith at March 18, 2004 07:08 PMVideo out... hmmm. Sounds like it will be completely compatible with Apples rumored Projector. www.avsforum.com
Posted by: Stefan Papas at April 18, 2004 11:12 PMThis could be good, apart form the bit where this information seems to be able to quite easily contradict itself. has anyone even seen anything relative to the supposed new iPod generation that will be able to play videos?
no? well i know i havent and it would seem that because it is now October the 2nd and this post was started in March, and also the fact that Apple released the new generation of iPod's in August, that there is not going to be an iPod capable of displaying video and having tv output, or that Apple are slowly building their way up to it. becasue the iPod Remixed (4th Generation of iPod) has not many new features apart form the shuffling of songs on the main menu and the earphone functions (e.g pauses when earphones are removed, turns on when earphones inserted, and the option of beign able to hear the click wheel in the earphones. This would suggest that it is going to be sometime till we see the video playing and tv output capable iPod.
I own an iPod, a 3rd Generation, I LOVE IT.
