Archos AV420 Review

Archos seems to have all its bases covered in the burgeoning portable video player field. On the heels of the more compact Gmini 400, PC Magazine has a brief review of its bigger sibling the Archos AV420. Clearly the AV420 is more of a video player than the Gmini 400 (which is essentially an audio player with a color screen):

If you want to be an early adopter of a capable portable media player, the Archos AV420 won't disappoint you. More cautious souls might want to see what's just over the horizon with Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Center players from Creative Labs, iRiver, Samsung, and others.

I have one of these babies coming in the next few days and I am after knowing if the Hard drive can be upgraded? The reason I ask this is that I have a new 80GB 2.5" HDD sitting here and it would be nice to have the extra capacity on the AV. What do you think? Or is there a physical size problem or a maximum sized drive that may be fitted to the AV420?

Posted by: Andy Wilkinson at October 7, 2004 01:13 PM

Sorry, the 2.5" drive won't fit because the AV420 uses 1.8" drives. Furthermore, a higher capacity 1.8" probably wouldn't fit either since they are usually thicker than their lower capacity brethren. This is why the 40GB iPod is slightly thicker than the 20GB.

Is it possible to queue songs on the AV420, i.e. while listening to one song, is it possible to select the next playing song which will start playing automatically when the current one is finished? I suppose you could call that "on-the-fly" playlist, but need to be able to do that WHILE the music is playing...a bit like a dj would do.
Thanks !

Fabien,

http://www.archos.com/products/overview/av400_series.html

According to the review at the link above, the AV420 does support on-the-fly playlists.

"The AV420 uses the Archos Double Browser system, which makes putting playlists together as easy as can be. In short, it keeps a running list of the songs you select on one side while letting you browse the directory, selecting songs from the other. As always, you can also create them on your PC via MusicMatch, Itunes (plug-ins included) etc."

Does anyone know the maximum size of jpeg file that can be shown on the av420?

Does anyone know the maximum size of jpeg file that can be shown on the av420? both the pixel and file size? Thanx

Posted by: Takano at November 11, 2004 04:43 AM

Not sure of the maximum JPG file size but I tried downloading 8 megapixel JPG images (from Canon EOS 20D) of about 4MB each and it was viewable but slow to appear on screen, taking about 5 seconds per image full screen. But using the 9-images per screen thumbnail view was fast and easy to browse the images.

THANKS TO ALL

Posted by: sam at December 14, 2004 01:56 PM

thing that i think to take note of is although the creative has a better battery life it cannot record whic to me is a big minus, dont wanna be sitting at my pc all day and also copying dvd's is not allowed, so that sucks

Posted by: karl at December 16, 2004 03:37 AM

Don't buy this if you want to transfer MPEG 4s from your camera or computer - it requires a lengthy conversion process. If the MPEG4 is not converted to the Archos conversion parameters, it cannot be viewed AT ALL.
Stinks for that use.

How is the video quality when hooked up to a TV? Is it near TV quality? any major pixilation problem?

Posted by: epoints at December 27, 2004 09:58 AM

I bought one of these babys last week and it is worth every penny.
The audio through my Sony "Bass boost" headphones is excellent and the video playing is amazing (When properly adjusted).
The Archos records at an impressive resoloution (TV setting not LCD), perfectly watchable at full screen on TV or PC, only downside is that it records on the fly, so compression is low, if your really bothered when transferring it to PC let Dr.Divx compress it to a smaller file.
My reasons for buying this was to record from Sky and watch my Tv eps at work and archive on my PC, for this feature I am far from dissapointed.
Audio is lovley and after 10 minutes of getting used to, the browser is a breeze (I can create playlists in my sleep).

For those of you who are having problems with videos here are my three methods.
1) For normal Videos (without crazy audio codecs) user the Archos + VirtualDub utility
2) Check the specs of recorded media and replacate settings in Dr.DivX
3) For you super lazy people with TV-Out enabled PC's (IE: Spent more than £20 on your graphics card), or if you have really crazy codecs or files which degrade a fair bit when converted hook it up to your PC play the files in a playlist and set it on a timed recording, when you wake up in the morning spend 10 minutes using AVI Splitter to trim and devide the big file into what ever you recorded, such as a few films, few episodes etc

I think this is a great bit of hardware, with the only real downside being the slightly pesky video convertion, considering that I would give it between 90-94% as £300 for a 20gb PORTABLE Music and Video Player/Recorder is wonderful, how much would it cost for a 20gb IPod and a static Hard drive recorder? Nuff said....

If I never had an MP3 player, I'd think the Archos AV420 wasn't possible. I own and use four (not including the AV120) MP3 systems. Granted this is my first hard drive player. I have two flash players (from iRock - they ROCK) and two CD MP3 players that provide incredible functionality.

I'll spew specifics. I admit the menu system is reminiscent of the old DOS days, but since it is essentially just another hard drive, the menu tree can be configured as you wish, and Archos did a nice job of setting it up in a logical manner. Furthermore, I use my other systems as comparison (my iRock, Sony and Magnavox systems) that deliver good (note - only "good") functionality compared to the AV420, but also my brother's iPod doesn't have the advanced sound "fine" tuning as with the AV420. If I needed more than 20 gigs to carry music I'd listen in a day, week or even month, I would have gone bigger (AV440), but since it connects with my computer so well, I am happy with the capacity. The design of the AV420 is such that once you are either comfortable with the directories or you set them up the way you want, one-handed no-peek operation is easy. It does in fact fit in the my shirt pocket. The AV420 is a mini tank. I wasn't looking for a player to show pictures or movies, but this system delivers those functions flawlessly.

While the price tag of over 450$ is steep it's well worth the price in gold. I received mine free (no lie) I checked out this site http://www.pvps4free.com/default.aspx?r=145058 and signed up for a free 2 week blockbuster video online membership (cool because you get to check out free videos 4 two weeks)and canceled it after the 2 weeks was up. But, what ever way you go about getting it, this is the best out there. Two tumbs up.

Heeeeeelp! I'm proud owner of the fab av440. as an mp3 player - great. recording direct from dvd player - great. can i get a signal from my sky box or sony vcr? er, no i can't. like a lot of people this was my main reason for choosing this over the host of pocket video PLAYERS. can anyone help? i've tried every scart socket on the tv [sony], vcr [sony] and digibox [pace/sky] and the red, white and yellow sockets on the front of tv [though i understand these are probably only input sockets]. gutted of london, greg

Hey, I'm thinking of Buying an AV420 but am also thinking of buying the PMA400

For a little more $$$, but it's missing a compact flash card reader...
It has WiFi connection? If thats like an internet conection, where can it be used?? Plus for the AV420 is it really that hard to download movies. Whats the solution? That and whats the problem with the pictures...whats the solution for that? Please help me out.

WiFi is "Wireless Fidelity" it is a wireless connection method that allows you to connect to another computer or even the internet. It needs a "hub" close by (less then 50 yards/meters) and often you also need a subscription from an ISP but in some cases it is provided free of charge. My local cofee shop for instance lets everyone connect inside their shop as a bonus. You can also get one for your own home for not too much money so you can use your own internet connection to browse and the hardrive of your PC to stream music and video to the device. It is all pretty nifty and a great bonus.

Not sure the PMA430 is good value for money. It is an experimental device and it is nothing better then a PDA with a 30GB HDD. Linux is not a OS that has a lot of extra's for available for the PDA at the moment and that will remain true for some time to come. If you want this device for it's video capabilities buy the AV400 series if you want a good PDA that also allows you to watch videos and listen to MP3 get the cheaper and better iPaq HX4700 and use the difference to buy a decent CF card. It has a better screen and better battery life.
