Mistic River, the iRiver community site, has published a nice review of the iRiver H340, their top-of-the-line color LCD audio player with a 40GB capacity. As could be expected of those who really know the ins and outs of iRiver products, the review is very thorough. We're especially pleased with real-world battery life testing rather than relying on vendor specs.
If you're in the market for the latest technology which iRiver has to offer then this should be your next purchase. It has the features, build quality and looks to impress the most die hard of fans. On the downside, USBOTG could have been better implemented with USB2.0 support as well as native support for a larger percentage of cameras and devices. In addition, the ability to copy subdirectories should have been a slam dunk. On the firmware side, the unit supports on-the-fly deleting of files throught the browser function but I'm wondering if iRiver should have waited a bit and tried to implement the more basic and user requested functions such as on-the-fly playlists, gapless play back, WAV support and unlimited WAV recording prior to releasing the unit to market. All in all a solid player with some outstanding features including the best color TFT screen to be found on any portable device.
this looks liek a great piece of kit, im one for lcd screens, though that alone wouldnt make me buy this, but the space might. does it come in one standard colour though...pink ipods seemed to do well and I just wish the industry would stop playing catch up with ipod..something orginal, please.

Posted by: Tim at August 31, 2004 03:24 PMUSB Storage to upload files is a big plus. So is the line out. But I won't buy it if it's not gapless.
Posted by: DrWorm at October 19, 2004 02:41 AMWithout an on the fly playlist you should immediately discount buying this player as this is a key feature. It is also a feature available in much older players thus indicating a fundamental flaw. Similarly, the software used in conjunction with the iriver players is one of the biggest drawbacks, this should be reviewed also.
Posted by: Daran Joshi at November 11, 2004 03:53 PMI only wish that people were not so ignorant when it comes to technology. It sickens me when people put down iriver products because they are "too hard to use", or "the software is lacking".. I think whats really lacking is the users ability to use a device that is clearly leaps and bounds above their own understanding.. ;-) ps. I have a H340 and it does indeed kick the socks off any other competing H/D mp3 player. btw, you can make playlist using the H340, you just have to know how to do it! Might want to read the manual if you can't figure it out (its pretty simple)..
Posted by: Ryan at November 21, 2004 11:36 AMI am located in Kuwait and have ordered IRIVER H320 from USA since the price is attractive. I later discovered that the US models do not have USBOTG faccility. Is there anyway one can upgrade this function. I also heard that the mfg. do not supply a few accessories which they supply in Europe and Asia.
Posted by: Abhijit Dey at November 26, 2004 06:02 AMUnfortunately, I don't think the US versions can be upgraded to USBOTG. A few people have tried using the Korean firmware, but USBOTG still didn't work. Read more about it here:

I bought one a few days ago. It sounds good and has some good features but is let down by the lack of OTG playlist and reliance on yukky winamp.
The manula is very porly written. Iriver get 9/10 for technology 3/10 for consumer awareness and marketing skills (esp coompared with Apple). Overall id say its built by geeks for heeks. Most average consumers wuill be better off with an Ipod
H340 are sik shit, they can play movies, no other h/d player can do that yet that i am aware of.
Posted by: Soul at May 8, 2005 05:25 AMiriver pisses all over ipod's shit like the other guy said if you are too dumb to use it then you are better off with a dummies tool (an ipod) even their software limits their players using a 3rd party winamp plugin you can remove drm on the fly and you can also remove the music off your player not even their own pathetic software can do that. iriver pisses all over their ipod photo as well
dont be fooled by apples crappy white plastic. on all of their products
Posted by: carbon-rod at May 26, 2005 02:39 PMthinking of buying an Iriver h340 but have heard that you can't set up playlists on the go and have to be constantly selecting music. anyonew know if this is true?
Posted by: newbie at June 12, 2005 09:29 AMi recently had an ipod, i used it every day and then one day it just died. wanted to know if Irivers are beter qualtiy, will the H340 last me more than a year?
hey i have an assignment to market ipod or any of it competitors, was wondering to market iriver, and suggestions on what irivers marketing strategy lacks?or where can it be improved?
Posted by: P at June 17, 2005 05:16 AMI'm also mourning the lack of any on-the-fly playlist feature in my new iriver, and will have to return it if I can't find some hack around this. I bought a zen 5 years ago that had this feature, and it's really pathetic that iriver hasn't managed to implement it. How can they expect people to use a sound system that can't queue songs? Seriously!
Posted by: j sarma at June 22, 2005 05:00 PMTHIS IS MY VERY FIRST BLOG POST ANYWHERE EVER!!!
I have been tooling around on the internet, and bothering anyone who will listen to me, for a month as I am researching the best mp3 player to buy. I am 99% positive about buying the IRiver h340. Now, my LAST question... should I buy over the internet OR find a retailer (J&R in NYC is close)so that if I need to return or get repairs I can just take it back to the store?
Ok, really the LAST question... how is customer support from IRiver? And since they don't have a battery replacement service, what happens after 3-4 years (I plan on using it A LOT!)?
Posted by: nannygoat at June 23, 2005 03:59 PMHad an H120 before and sound with Etymotic ER4 s was incredible. Bought H340 - sound is rubbish. May be OK with packaged 'phones, but when exposed by good ones it is pure earache. Returned to seller (Advanced MP3 Players - very unhelpful) and iRiver in Germany who assure me working erfectly. Maybe OK for those wishing to blast their eardrums and annoy others on public transport, but not for real music lovers who want quality performance. I don't givea damn about screens. It's the sound that matters
