Engadget takes an in depth look at Creative's Portable Media Player in their new Zen PMC review. They mostly like it, but there are important caveats:
The soundbite is that we think the Portable Media Center is good for folks with Media Center PCs and PCs with TV tuner cards which can record TV - that's really the one killer feature of these new devices. If you don't have a Media Center and don't record TV to your PC (or don't download a crapload of movies) then this device might not be quite as useful for you.
I have the zen media center and I love it. MP3's sound excellent on it and, since I am a photographer, the large display screen is nice for showing off photos or to use as a digital portfolio.
only 3 downsides that i can think of...
It occasionally freezes or fails to turn on. this is easily remedied by removing the battery and simply pressing the reset button in the battery compartment.
secondly, I cannot stand to use earbuds, so i ditched the earbud headphones that came with it and bought a 20 dollar Sony headset and the sound is fantastic.
Lastly, the preset equalizer modes don't seem to change the sound enough. I would rather have sliders on the screen that I could manually set the equalizer myself.
Overall, this is a nice sturdy piece of equipment with very good sound quality and an LCD screen large enough to actually enjoy pictures and video.
