News reports have indicated that chipmaker SigmaTel has inked a deal with Apple to provide chipsets for an upcoming MP3 player. The stories note that the player will NOT be a harddrive-based model like the iPod and iPod Mini, rather a flash-based device that will likely be much smaller than the iPod Mini, but with smaller storage capacity. When will we see it? Not long from now:
Citing ``numerous sources in Asia,'' Thomas Weisel analyst Jason Pflaum said Apple will use SigmaTel's controller chips for a player it's planning to launch this Christmas.
Of course any new Apple MP3 product announcement is a suprise, but we are especially suprised that Apple chose SigmaTel to provide the chipset over their long-time chipset partner, PortalPlayer.

Some Corroboration for the New iPod Rumor?
Update:
SigmaTel itself announced today that it has cemented a partnership with Rio. So it is possible that the quoted source confused Apple with Rio, but that would make "Thomas Weisel analyst Jason Pflaum" an enormous idiot (or at least the person who misquoted him).
Play has been in every iPod and you know what analysts are like. That should be your starting point. If you were going to announce a new product at macworld, and PLAY was in it people not goint to be surprised if PLAY comes out with a data sheet for flash player lol
remember the iphoto fiasco when everyone just looked at the portal pr and in a month they had the iPod photo on every macrumor site with pictures etc.
Sigmatel guy is brain dead, thats my take.
He probably read the data sheet from 2 years ago like the other clown on here.
So, the guy from portal is talking about the possibilites with 1g and above and mentioning something different in flash and you prefer to take an analysts guess who covers stigmatel and was wrong about the christmas release of iPod flash?
Hmmm.. sounds reasonable to me
Good luck. The last release by PLAY was about a year ago. I dont think theyve been twiddling thier thumbs for 11 months while stigmatel comes out with rio carbon flop. Too bad that putting in more memory and making it cheaper didnt help the ugly POS. iPod mini is a cultural phenomenon, not a POS like that. My point being the reaction to that could be Apple choosing stigmatel, or apple going with a very upscale 1 g industry changing flash iPod
