Creative Zen Micro Now Plays For Sure

Creative has released a firmware update for the Zen Micro that adds support for Microsoft's PlaysForSure DRM technology. Napster to Go, among others, uses PlaysForSure to protect music, so the Zen Micro is now compatible with Napster's newest service. [Via Nomadness]

To install the firmware, download the file from the Creative support site, connect the Zen Micro to your computer, run the download .EXE and then click Upgrade.

I'm happy with this update as I tried Napster's bloaty service with a BETA firmware and I did not enjoy having to use WMP 10 all the time. Now I can use Media Zen Explorer or whatever it's called so I can add files quickly.

I bought a Zen Micro for Napster To Go, and even though I'm leaving Napster at least for now, I'm still happy with the sound, recording capability, and FM that ZM provides.

(Autosync for podcasts was okay for WMP 10, but in terms of adding a file and then finding it within WMP, I don't recommend this method.)

"Napster to Go, among others, uses PlaysForSure to protect music..."

Sorry if I sound a bit negative, but wouldn't it be more accurate to say something like

"Napster to Go, among others, uses PlaysForSure to restrict access to music you have purchased..."

Yes I realize this is a service people actually want, but this trend of the commoditization of an increasingly obligately disposable facet of human culture is sad to me. That such a 'technology' is actually used as a marketing ploy is quite odd. At this rate, in a few years everyone will have to pay up a monthly fee to even listen to music, and we'll like it that way. All that is needed is a few little bits of technology to ensure something like a broadcast flag in music can be enforced. We have already seen that our (U.S.) government is willing to pass laws to help enforce that kind of thing (DMCA, Broadcast Flag).

Enough doom and gloom though. At least I can hope I'm wrong about the direction things are going.

Anyone know if OGG and Linux support is planned for the Micro? Looks like a good player but I have too many OGG files already...
