iPod Camera Connector Review

The all-things-iPod guys at iPodlounge have written up their review of the newly release iPod Camera Connector. If (and only if) you have an iPod Photo, the Camera Connector will let you import photos directly from a digital camera (but not another iPod Photo). The verdict:

Overall, the iPod Camera Connector is a suitably inexpensive and simple way for digital photographers to transfer to and view their pictures on an iPod photo. It remedies the biggest single complaint that early iPod photo purchasers (and potential purchasers) had about Apple's newest iPod, and though it is technically more powerful because it's doing more with the photos it imports, it preserves the slow overall transfer times of the photo transfer peripherals we've previously tested. On balance, serious photographers will like some of its features, but because of the long transfer times and battery issues will probably continue not to view the iPod photo as a legitimate alternative to a dedicated hard disk-based photo vault.

Hi! The iPOD camera connector looks a great device but will it do everything I need of it? I know that the iPOD Photo won't display TIF or RAW files but I do need it to store these files. Does anyone know whether the iPOD camera connector will allow the iPOD Photo to capture and save RAW & TIFF files? My camera is the Nikon D70 if that helps.

Cheers

Neil.

Neil,

This from http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2005/03/ipodcamconnect/index.php

"A question on the minds of many of those with more expensive digital cameras is whether the iPod Camera Connector supports RAW images. The answer is “not exactly.” Although the device will download RAW images to the iPod, those images can’t be displayed on the iPod. In the thumbnail display you’ll see RAW images represented by the word RAW surrounded by a gray circle. When you select one of these images and press the Select button, you see this message:

"This photo format cannot be viewed on iPod. Transfer imported photos to your computer and synchronize through iTunes to display them on iPod.

"For professional photographers, this limitation may queer the deal."

Hope this helps,

Paul

Hi! I'm considering to buy one but my problem is that I'm not sure it supports the camera I own Fuji S5600. Do you know how it works?

Thanks
Nina

I have a Cannon EOS 30D, and I bought one of these and brought it with my 60 gig IPod on Vacation last week. I took about 2500 pictures over the week and I have to say this unit sucks.. It eats power, it's slow (so slow that I couldn't transfer my whole 4 gig from the camera without the IPOD sutting down and messing up the transfer cause of batter life). I had to tranfer a couple hundred images at a time and then recharge the IPOD - and then had to manually delete the couple hundred images off the camera to free up room - major time consuming. I'm taking it back and just going to buy another 4 gig Compact flash next time I go away. 1 - 4gig flash is plenty for non-vacationing.
