Sony NW-HD5 Coming Soon

It looks like Sony has something new and improved up its sleeve: the NW-HD5, a tiny 20GB audio player that is the successor to the less-than-successful NW-HD1, NW-HD2 and NW-HD3. (Sidebar: according to a DAPReview member, 4 is associated with death Japan, so that's why it isn't the NW-HD4).

In any case, Sony may finally have a winner on its hands. The NW-HD5 is signficantly smaller than the iPod, measuring just 3.5"x2.6"x0.56" and 4.8oz, compared with the current 20GB iPod at 4.1"x2.4"x 0.57" and 5.6oz. Battery life is reported to range into 30 hours, compared with the iPod's 12 hour charge.

It appears that the NW-HD5 will be released some time in May with a retail price of around US$375, which is quite a bit higher than the 20GB iPod's $299 retail price. Also, there appear to be 3 color choices: red, black and white.

AV Watch (machine translated) of Japan has several pics of the NW-HD5, including this nice Apple/Sony size comparison.

More bits at: Engadget (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), DAPReview (1 and 2), Gizmodo, Pocket Lint (1 and 2), Tech Digest UK and Digital Media Thoughts.

you guys are stupid it is cheapper than an ipod 20gb and it is better than an ipod and it is smaller than an ipod mini

2 points about this which may or may not steer people to this product over the ipod or others: 1.) if you owned other Sony portable products that had inline remotes such as Discmans, Minidiscs players/recorders (the combo earphone jack/flat bladed plug), supposedly they will work with this unit thus saving you a little something with accessories expense and an added convenience factor 2.) a 30gb special edition is also to be released in June at approx. the same list price, making the decision to buy or wait that much harder.

Thank god, i finally found something that is great and that not every second person has. I am in china now and my shitty old MD player konked it, I am buying this. Besides, it's a sony!

I live in the UK, this player came out here about a week ago. I have one and can say it's stunning. The sound is a huge leap over the tinny, crunched up sounds of the iPod. Visit this post at my site for my first thoughts and pictures of it:

Hey lyris -

Have just purchased a Sony NW-HD5 and agree they are stunning - finally a player from SONY worthy of the Walkman brand.

You mention in your review after you know how to remove the restricted sound levels on the European player - could you e-mail me this much needed knowledge..??

Cheers,

Is that true that the display of Sony Nw-HD5 has no backlight??? Thank you very much.

Could you perhaps send me information on fixing the sound restrictions on the EU version?

Thank you

Obby

Hi Lyris,

I also feel really frustrated about that european sound restriction, and thus would be very pleased to hear about the way to solve this problem.

Thanks a lot

check out amazon.co.uk customer reviews for the solution to the sound restriction problem. this player is excellent and it survived me dropping from waiste height. G lok worked as advertised... by this, soundstage struggles with existing mp3 collections but fine for new collections...

HEY LYRIS COULD YOU TELL ME HOW TO DISABLE THE EUROPEAN SOUND RESTRICTION ON MY HD5 THANKS!!

Posted by: Simon at June 11, 2005 07:28 AM

The NW-HD5 is listed on SonyStyle (US) at $299.00 MSRP. Exactly the same as a 20GB Ipod!

Paul - as to the idiotic sound restrictions (the politically correct filth at it again) the British forum below has the answer:-

Here's the answer - but you'll have to join AV forums.

does anyone know anything about the release date for the 30gb model (NW-HD5H) in the states?

Posted by: duke at July 5, 2005 04:44 PM

Here again. Do you guys know wether the guarantie is still valid if you remove the EU sound limit.?

Posted by: Mark G at July 5, 2005 05:46 PM

I've owned 5 iPods from first generation onward before purchasing a Sony 20GB NW-HD5H and I have to say it is a FAR, FAR, FAR better product. From the battery life to the sound quality. I hear that Apple is working on an iPod that will allow you to watch your favorite TV shows. My only question is ...shouldn't you work the NUMEROUS bugs out of your current product before you attempt to add more functionality?
Anyway, I like my Sony Walkman and will never again buy an iPod.
