iRiver H10 Gets a 6GB Boost

It looks as if iRiver will be upgrading (in Korean) the H10 from a 4GB capacity to 6GB in the near future. Moves like this are pretty much a no brainer these days, as the iPod Mini and Creative Zen Micro have already made the jump. [Via DAPReview].

according to the iriver site, the H10 is 5GB already. What's with the 4GB reference?

They've been 5 GB ever since they came out -- 1 GB more than the (then) 4 GB iPod mini.

A no brainer ;-)

I put up a short review of the 5gb H10 on my site if you want to check it out: http://www.coolslice.com/blog/2005/05/iriver-h10-mp3-player-review.html

Very nice blog, btw...very clean and easy to navigate!

Hi iRiver,
I recently purchased an H10 (5GB) about 1 month ago, and am having a problem. The unit was working fine unitl I turned on the unit yesterday and got the message:

"System Files Missing: To Restore the system files connect H10 to iriver plus"

I logged on to your support site and read the posting at;
http://www.iriveramerica.com/support/hd/h10_5-6gb.aspx

I downloaded the firmware and followed the instructions. I even tried it twice using both options (The restore option, followed by the complete format option). I am still having this problem. I cannot tun the unit off after getting this error, so I am forced to take out the battery to cut the power.

How do I get around this problem?

To anyone who's had the system files problem. It's easily solved. The reason this has happened is because you used Iriver Plus, and it autoupdated your Iriver with the wrong firmware. In order to fix it, you need to start up Iriver plus, activate your Iriver in UMS mode (just google it), and then format the drive by right-clicking on it in my computer. Make sure you format it under the FAT32 system. After that, follow the instructions in the firmware update. Hope this helps.

I seem to have a problem with my iriver H10. There was a function called Databace Refresh that seems to have frozen my device. When the refresh began there was a small clock in the middle of the screen. The clock was on the screen for about three hours. I began to worry. So I tried to stop the refresh. I pushed all the buttons. Nothing happend. So I pulled out the battery, put it back in, and then turned the power back on. Now the only thing that shows up is the small moving clock with the blue background. If anyone of you fine people could help me with this problem I would be so happy.

I have had a few problems relating to my H10 and iriver plus before and have had them resolved. Now when i open iriver plus and attempt to play a song, iriver plus displays the message "The device number specified is invalid" and will not play any songs. I have reinstalled the software but this did not help. Can anyone help me with this?

To all that have the 'system files missing' problem, i myself had this problem so i took it back to the store. My computer could also not detect the iriver when it was connected. The store assistant installed iriver plus onto a computer in the store and the same problem occurred there. They sent away my H10 to be repaired, but the supplier lost it, and i ended up being given a new one. For anyone who has this problem i suggest you take your iriver back to the store, have them get in contact with the supplier and send it away to be repaired. I know this is a hasle but i think it is the only way.

The iRiver H10 sucks just a bit less than iRiver's support for it! I think this is one of the reasons why iRiver has moved so quickly to introduce new players to the market. From what I can see there has been a lot of backlash from unhappy H10 owners, but iRiver seems content to do nothing about it, hoping the unhappy users will just shut up and go away.

So what's wrong with the H10? Lots! To begin, the button layout is poor. And when combined with the cheap (found one at the dollar store the other day) condom case the H10 comes in, the buttons are even more painful to work with. The finger pad on the front is great, as are the front buttons. The side buttons suck because almost every time I try to put the player back in the condom case I accidentally hit some button on the side which stops the podcast I'm listening to.

The H10's battery boast is about 6 hours overblown! I get about 6 hours on my H10, and I'm sure I could reduce that to 2 hours if I used the H10 even on a semi-regular basis. The problem is tied to another problem, iRiver's implementation of the MTP, Media Transfer Protocol. Basically it boils down to this: Unless you're using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Media Player 10, you can't transfer files to your PC. There are hacks, which I'll get to in a moment. The player also has UMS (I think it's UMS) mode, but to activate it, you have to pull the battery, replace it, and hold down a key combination -- that's gotta be hard on the battery! International users are lucky because the H10 is supposedly in UMS mode by default, but North American users are SOL because iRiver sold out to Microsoft on this one.

Actually, though MTP doesn't play well with Macs and Linux, it does apparently work on other versions of Windows, but again, iRiver doesn't want to have to support those users.

I'm not sure why iRiver released such a poor product after releasing a number of good players, but one thing is clear: unless you love Windows XP, the H10 is not the portable music player to buy!

I recently purchased a iriver H10 about 2 weeks ago. I was listening to it, and then it shut off after i didn't touch it for a while, which is normal. Now when i try to turn it on it won't turn on. I plugged it in to see if it was the charge, but that isn't it. The on button seams to maybe be a little loose, does that mean it's broken?

How do you delete files from the H10/4G model? Can't seem to get play lists to transfer. Music titles that do transfer show up twice? How do you stop music once it has started? Using Windows XP and Media Player. Received this as a gift and extremely disappointed!

to restore the system files, connect H10 to iriver plus

The system files missing is a very common fault. H10 wont communicate with computer or with iriver plus.mine was under warranty and iriver service replaced the hard drive. the windows media player has a system file restore function if you can get it to work.

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could be so kind and tell whats wrong with this player. It is an iRiver H10 and was working fine awhile ago. The other day I tried adding music to it and now you can't view any of the songs on it from the computer nor can you add any. It will just say "The file could not be copied. It may not exist or is being used by another program. Well it does exist, and no it's not being used by another program. It's weird because every other mp3 player I've used works like an external harddrive where you can add/remove files at your leisure, but this one only works with 1 of my computers. Basically I can no longer add/remove music from the h10. Anyone know why?

I was a huge fan and supporter of iRiver. Then one of their products broke, and I faced the nightmare of dealing with the support department. I will never buy iRiver again. If you want the full story, write me at iriversucks@quoke.com.

i was trying to put music onto my H10 player and some of the artist did not show up and some music was not there. These files were "MPEG-4 Audio Files" and I am wondering if the H10 can support this music file type. Can someone please e-mail me, much appreciated.

My mate highly recommended iRiver to me because of his H120 so I got a H10. Since I got it over a year ago it has never worked properly: fading music, won't turn on, firmware upgrade trouble, system restore files...you name the problem and it's had it!

The most recent one I'm trying to solve is the system restore files but I need iriverplus to do it, where can I get it from?
